Entries from December 2008
Between the holidays and all of the excitement about the “thrilla in vanilla“, I totally missed last week’s UCI World Cup race in Nommay, France. Here’s a video of the final lap. It comes down to a sprint, so I won’t tell you who wins, just in case you haven’t already heard.
Unfortunately, I can’t find any good video of the women’s race, which was won by American Katie Compton (her second World Cup victory in a row). Let me know if you’ve seen anything out there.

This isn’t really a cyclocross video, but anyone who gave or received Guitar Hero for Christmas yesterday might like it. Also, the makers of this video definitely capture the spirit of cyclocross (West Coast cyclocross, anyway) with their willingness to put nearly immeasurable time and energy into an endeavor that most “normal” people consider a rather bizarre waste of time.

Update: The KCCX cyclocross fight video is now online.
It’s been almost a week since the USA Cycling 2008 Cyclocross National Championships in Kansas City, and the video pickings are still slimmer than Paris Hilton after a week-long Ex-Lax binge. I have managed to cull out a few interesting clips, which are posted below, but I’m still waiting for the good stuff. DH Productions produced a great video last year, the Eight-Ball Diaries, but I’m afraid they only do that if Tim Johnson wins, and he finished 5th this year. Surely someone is going to put together a good overview of the elite race, with high production value and a decent soundtrack. Let me know if you see one before I do.
The video everyone is really waiting for however, isn’t of the race at all. It’s of the dust-up/scuffle/brawl/donnybrook between Jonathan Page’s brother-in-law and Cale “I am not a Page Hater” McAninch, who was apparently, in fact, loudly hating on Page during a post race interview. A shoving match ensued, Page’s sister also got in on the action, and the Richard Sachs Team’s bikes were trampled, leading to threats of legal action from Sachs himself.

This is the final lap of today’s UCI World Cup race in Igorre, Spain. Unfortununately, it’s a bit of a snooze, consisting almost excluisively of Sven Nys grinding through the mud on his way to a convincing solo victory.
There’s a nice shot of a bike change at 2:10, however, and I also liked the muddy turn at the bottom of a hill right before a river (1:15). That could have been interesting.
For those of you keeping score at home, the World Cup standings (after five events) are Sven Nys (BEL), Bart Wellens (BEL), and Zdenek Stybar (CZE).

Via Cyclocross Magazine, here is a helmet cam video of one lap around the course in Kansas City’s Tiffany Springs Park that will be used for the USA Cycling 2008 Cyclocross National Championships on December 11-14.
This video was shot at the beginning of November, though, and the 10-day weather.com forecast for Kansas City current shows a high of 36F and and low of 22F on December 12. So while the course may look the same (assuming there’s no snow), expect to see warmer kits than those being rocked in this video.

Here are a couple of videos from the fifth race in the Superprestige series, held on Sunday in Gieten, Netherlands. The first clip is a recap of the whole race, while the second focuses on the finale, during which Sven Nys valiantly - but unsuccessfully - pursued Bart Wellens and Klaas Vantornout, who prevailed over Wellens in a sprint finish.
The podium finishers of Sunday’s race are also at the top of the overall Superprestige standings. With three races left in the series, the leaders are Nys (71 points), Vantornout (68 points), and Wellens (62 points).
